DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1  CALAMA ARRIVAL – TAMBILLO

You will be met in Calama (7.280 ft) airport. One hour and a half drive across the Atacama Desert and the Andes Mountains to the picturesque town of San Pedro de Atacama (7.797 ft). In the afternoon, visit the Salt Range and the Moon Valley Nature Sanctuary. At the Moon Valley Nature Sanctuary, you will see barren ridges and soaring cliffs formed by the folding of the watery ground underneath a salt lake, which as it rose, created beautiful forms and spires that appear to be sculptures. Drive to El Tambillo, a Tamarugo forest in the nearest of Atacama salt flat, where we set up our Base Camp. Barbecue for dinner.

Day 2 TAMBILLO “ TOCONAO & CHAXA LAGOON – MISCANTI & MISCATI LAGOON – TAMBILLO

Breakfast at the Base Camp. Drive to Toconao native village and Chaxa lagoon in the immense Atacama Salt Flat. A 300,000 hectares salt deposit, the Atacama Salt Flat, is a place inhabited by many species of flamingos in the National Reserve of the same name. Continuing on, we will drive to the high plateaus, reaching 14.100 feet, to the dazzling Miscanti and Miniques lagoons with it special fauna, such as the giant Tagua bird. Lunch at the foothill of this amazing volcanoes. Return to the camp. Camp.Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
Second opportunity for Guided astronomical observations

Day 3 TAMBILLO “ ALMA (available only on Sunday and Saturday, needs early booking) OR CHAJNANTOR FLATS “ SAN PEDRO

Visit of the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) site or Chajnantor flats. ALMA is the most powerful radio observatory on earth and is currently functioning in the Chilean altiplano, in Atacama, at an altitude of 16.400 FT. ALMA is comprised of some 64 12-meter sub-millimetre quality antennas, with baselines extending up to 10 km. all of them located at Chajnantor flats, at 16.400 ft. The visit starts at 09 am and you will be back to San Pedro at 01 pm. The ALMA project offers these guided visits on regular bases every Saturday and Sunday, no private visits are allowed. Another very exciting option would be to drive to Cerro Toco, at 16.400 ft, from where you will have an impressive view of the Chajnantor flats and ALMA antennas. In the afternoon a walk in the Death Valley will show you a different view of the Salt Range.

Third opportunity for Guided astronomical observations

Day 4  SAN PEDRO – TATIO GEYSERS – CALAMA

Early drive to the geothermal Tatio Geysers Camp (14.170 ft), a place where violent plumes of vapor from the boiling water wells surface. A hot breakfast will be served at the geothermal site during the visit. Then you will spend the day visiting Caspana (10.824 ft), a fertile cultivated valley that is characterized by its rock architecture, Liparita, and roofs of straw and mud. Later on, always on the way to Calama, visit the beautiful San Francisco Church in Chiu Chiu (8.282 ft), small town built in 1675. Lunch in route. At the end of the day transfer to Calama airport. End of services. Breakfast and lunch included.
